Single-Joint?

Multi-Joint?

I’m sure you’re wondering what I’m talking about.. and would love it if someone super smart came along and wrote up a storm about it!

So! Let me fill you in on all the info you’ve been missing out on

Single-joint exercise is the type of exercise you primarily see at your local gym or high school, where you see guys, who struggle to make progress, doing what they consider “exercise.” I saw it so much at my high school.. guys who don’t know how to properly train, going from machine to machine lifting as much as they could with only one muscle group, trying to isolate it.

My first question is: why would you even want to?

If you go through your life training like this, where are you going to get real-world strength?!

Real-world strength comes into play every day for you!

Moving a bookcase, hauling wood, carrying a heavy backpack, lifting an object off the floor with good form.. these are all examples of real-world strength–things you probably do at some point every day!

The various examples above – or others you can think of – take a large number of muscles contracting and relaxing. They use multiple joints because the joints are called on for their movement to perform the exercise efficiently and effectively. For example, when you lift an object off the floor, how many joints come into play? If you’re performing the lift with good form, you have to drop your hips low enough to keep your back flat so it won’t strain, which in turn makes your knee joint bend. This is otherwise known as a multi-joint exercise, because you’re using your knee and hip joints in unison to raise the weight off the floor.

Think about your local gym or high school; let’s take one of the staple machines you find in pretty much every gym: the leg extension machine.

The leg extension has very little real-world strength application. When do you ever just sit in a chair and try to leverage a weight off the ground using only your quadricep muscles? Seriously, who does that??

The body doesn’t work anywhere near its peak efficiency by doing isolation exercises. It was designed to use the kinetic chain (muscles that assist one another to perform movement) to lift weights. Why would you not want to create a body for yourself where every muscle group supports one another?

In the perfect body, all the muscle groups form a powerful, solid unit. Why would you ever train without that in mind?

Guys – get off the machines. You can make so many more gains by trying real-world strength training!

Your goals shouldn’t just be a nice thought of where you want to be days, months, years from now.

You can get there! Why not train right now, the right way, to attain your goals?

The year was 2006.

I think.

I can’t remember the year clearly, but my buddy Josiah and I use to try and do what we thought were awesome “gladiator workouts” making us complete eye candy for the ladies! (guys seriously. the things we do for girls..)

Boy were we wrong.

We use to workout 4 days a week. For almost three hours.

Seriously this isn’t a joke! We were nuts! We would start sometimes right around 6:30pm and not get done until 10:00pm. We did primarily all isolation exercises, meaning we would work one specific muscle group for a predetermined number of sets and reps. Usually we stuck to the boring, old 3 sets of 10 or 15 reps. I don’t have any idea how we didn’t go out of our minds and start throwing weights at each other. Honestly, that would have been more exciting!

I’ve always loved training. I started when I was 11-12, I would lay in bed and simply throw a 18 pound bowling ball to myself over and over. I tried to get 200 reps in every night before I eventually passed out..

But here’s the thing.

Our workouts were better than nothing. Heck, I have to give myself some credit here

But, our workouts were absolutely unnecessary and inefficient. I’d never been taught how to make a workout actually fun, and as any of you who’ve come and trained with us, how to make a workout beastly. I think that “beastly” sums up our workouts very well. We know you don’t want a boring routine. We sure don’t, I can’t stand an exercise that I just simply hate because I can’t feel myself improving..

Dean changed all that.

In the middle of a workout, after being invited by my dad to come check out what we were doing, Dean popped in my room and told us “don’t mind me, keep working out I just want to watch.”

We didn’t mind one bit and started pumping out weights as best we could. Halfway through the workout, we starting doing dumbbell hammer curls 3 sets 10 reps an arm. Same speed as every other workout we had done that night. He simply stopped us and didn’t change the exercise, but changed the speed which we’d been doing them at.

He told us to take the dumbbell and instead of doing full boring old reps (that our muscles had gotten good at) to curl the weight up slowly counting up from 1 to 5. Ten times.

Then had us start at the top and slowly lower it to halfway using the same cadence (speed) and then curl it back to the start.

In one set, my arms were toast. I mean, totally and utterly gone.

Right then and there I figured out that there’s more to training than being stuck in one boring routine.

I started training with Dean over the next couple of months and haven’t looked back since.

Can you say the same thing? Are you happy with your training? If you even are?

Guys, isolation exercises have their uses. But here’s something to think about. How many muscles do you have? How long of a workout would you have to do to hit every… single…one…? Who has 6 hours a day to work them all? Get off the machines!

so boringg…

If you’re currently working out at a crappy high school weight gym like I was, what do you have to lose? I bet you’re not making the progress you think you should be or I think you should be!

Come try some real world strength training for a change! We promise you won’t ever be bored.

Unleash the beast.

-ty
